On the 17th of December 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari will be 73 years old. Although this should naturally call for celebration as the president is ageing gracefully, some people might be worried for the Daura-born former military general.

This is because Buhari seem to be affected by his age as his several gaffes at different fora has become a source for concern for even his ardent supporters.

Naij.com has compiled a series of avoidable mistakes that the president has made that has caused Nigeria and indeed Nigerians embarrassment both at home and abroad.

Read below:

1. Before he became the president, Buhari, at a rally in Owerri, the Imo state capital, openly called his deputy and current vice president, Professor Yemi Osibande. His name is Professor Yemi Osibajo.

2. Days later, Buhari who was live on international news channel, Cable News Network (CNN) and being interviewed by veteran journalist, Christine Amanpour, referred to his political party as “All Progressives Confidence” instead of All Progressives Congress (APC).

3. In that same interview, Buhari confidently referred to Nigeria’s electoral body as “Independent Nigeria Electoral Commission” instead of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

4. Recently, in far away Germany, President Buhari referred to German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, as President Michelle. The president is apparently not aware that Ms. Merkel is referred to as “Chancellor” and the president of Germany is Joachim Gauck.

5. In the same event, President Buhari referred to Germant as “West Germany”. Meanwhile, Germany ceased to be West Germany in 1990.

Meanwhile, Primate Babatunde Elijah Ayodele has predicted doom for the APC and the new administration headed by Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari Set To Borrow Outstanding Salary And Subsidy

The All Progressive Congress (APC) transition committee has suggested that the federal government consider issuing bonds to raise the needed money to settle salary arrears and outstanding fuel subsidy payments The Cable reports.

The transition committee’s report which is currently being studied by President Buhari is expected to shape his policies.

The committee led by Mallam Ahmed Joda has advised the federal government to promise to issue the bond issue effectively placing the risk on the federal capital rather than the states.

Though this increases the debt burden of the federal government, the committee has viewed the inherited salary and subsidy arrears as “short-term liabilities” which should be addressed by the president to avoid “civil unrest”.

Federal workers are owed over N400 billion in outstanding salaries while that of oil marketers is in excess of N200 billion following a cut in the pump price of petrol as well as the devaluation of the naira.

As many as 20 states are currently unable to pay salaries mainly because of a drop in federally allocated revenue as a result of falling crude oil prices.

According to The Cable, the states are also to benefit from the bond issue to settle salary arrears.

The transition committee said that in helping out the states from their economic hardship, “it is important that strict conditionalities be applied”.

These include, no increases in headcount while any borrowing remains in place, commitment to biometric capture and fully automated payroll management within 6-9 months, commitment to improvements in collection of internally generated revenue (IGR) and establishment of a mechanism to mitigate risk of diversion of funds.

The committee further advised the federal government to raise funds by blocking “leaks” in the system  through the enforcement of the Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA) across all ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).

However it is not certain if Buhari will implement the recommendations of the transition committee.

Meanwhile the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) has vowed to wage war against the new administration of President Muhammadu Buhari if it decides to cut the salaries of civil servants in a bid to reduce the cost of governance.

Amanju Pinnick, president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has spoken on reasons the men’s senior national football team fails to perform to expectation.

Pinnick, who was speaking during a live programme monitored in Lagos this morning, revealed that the players are not friendly to each other off the pitch and this always rubs off when the players get into the field of play.

“I noticed that Nigerian players are not friends, so how will they pass the ball to each other?” he queried.

“There’s a level of indiscipline in the team, you can imagine what happened the other day. We conceded a penalty kick and you went ahead to hit another player, can you do that with your club? We did not get as much support as we got from Kaduna from other places.

“The comment by Enyeama also heightened security in the state. Every player called upon to play for Nigeria henceforth will be accompanied with a code of conduct.”

While commenting on the recent saga rocking Fifa, Pinnick noted that the situation is still under investigation and should not be discussed.

He, however, insisted that “Blatter promised to bring the world cup to Africa and he even did more than he promised for Africa

“Nobody can ignore Africa. There is an alliance between Africa and Europe and we come as an indivisible unit under Isa Hayatou. We have decided together, to tow a line and the support for Africa from Fifa can not wane. We are looking at who wants to come in and what benefits we can get from him.

“To us, all the scandals are subjective. There are investigations going on and they are ending in criminal charges.”

Recall that the Nigerian players recently battled to a 2-0 win over Chad in a nations cup qualifying match held at the Ahmadu Bello stadium, Kaduna.

The went on, accusing the PDP of using the old practice of falsehood and blackmail” to divert Ekiti people’s attention from proven cases of corruption in the Ekiti administration.

APC once again challenged Fayose to account for the N720 million salary bazaar and N650 million deducted monthly into the purse of an “election contractor.”

PDP had on Sunday claimed that Fayemi diverted over N4 billion raised from workers’ deductions “for sharing from time to time in the APC secretariat in the four years that his administration lasted.” they revealed that the deal was discovered during the workers’ verification exercise

5 Reasons Why Naira’s Rate Will Continue To Fall

$

Despite Nigeria’s central bank holds official rate of naira atN196.90 against one dollar, the real value of the national currency is falling. See five reasons behind that trend.

naira cbn

Central bank decided on Friday what to do with naira exchange rate, no longer coinciding with its real value. The decision is yet to be known for the general public.

Despite central bank’s efforts to keep naira’s exchange rate at level of N196.90 for one dollar, which didn’t change from June 11, there are signs that naira is about to start falling soon.

In fact, at the parallel market on Friday it was sold for N221 against the dollar already, while a week before one dollar was sold for N220.

READ ALSO: I Will Ensure Naira Is Equal To Dollar In Value – Buhari

The reason behind that depreciation is the first reason for naira to fall further. There is a growing shortfall between increasing demand for foreign currency and the foreign exchange available for sale. And while the central bank tries to keep its official exchange rate low, this tendency of a shortfall between the demand and supply is about to grow further.

READ ALSO: Nigeria Is Half Bankrupt

The second reason is the decreasing demand for Nigeria’s crude oil in the international market. Due to that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation had to reduce the price of the country’s crude oils to their lowest points in over a decade.

World Bank ex-vice president, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, has warned recently in an interview that Nigeria is facing hard times as it has to end what she called the “addiction to free oil money”.

Many state governments are already unable to pay the salaries as their monthly allocation from the federal government falling drastically due to falling oil revenues. Now the federal government has only one immediate solution to that problem – printing more money which means starting the mechanism of further inflation. And this is the third reason for naira’s possible fall in the nearest future.

READ ALSO: Nigeria Suffers Tensity Rise Because Of Unpaid Salaries

The fourth reason is the threat from JP Morgan to exclude Nigeria from its Government Bond Index (GBI-EM) by the end of the year unless the central bank removes its tight measures preventing the outflow of foreign currency from foreign exchange market and thus keeping naira’s rate afloat.

READ ALSO: JP Morgan Recommends UBA Shares Over 45% Upside Potential

Besides that, tight regulations and restraints that have been clogging the market of foreign exchange, cause an outflow of foreign investment, and that doesn’t add any good to the desperate economic situation.

READ ALSO: CBN Gives Up Controlling Foreign Investment

This might be the fifth reason for CBN to let naira’s exchange rate to float freely – and for the national currency in a critical economic situation that can mean free falling.

The central bank representatives together with commercial banks’ executives had a meeting on Friday to decide the further fate of weakening naira.

Falling prices of oil, Nigeria’s main export, have heavily hit naira’s stability which in turn caused a sell-off in assets by foreign investors.

In February Nigeria’s central bank had to impose tight measures of control on the foreign exchange market to save Nigeria’s dwindling foreign reserves.

Three months ago the central bank of Nigeria announced that there are no plans to introduce capital controls despite the current economic challenges facing the nation.

Six months ago the central bank of Nigeria announced the devaluation of the naira, with the new exchange officially at N168 to a dollar, and no longer N155.

He said the methods being talked about were to be used to track down oil pipeline vandals.

Vanguard quotes him saying: “I can assure you that we are already exploring new approaches which will include the massive deployment of technology as opposed to the outdated conventional approach you are use to.’’

The NSCDC boss lamented the rising oil theft which is affecting the economy of the country, adding that the objective was to stop vandalism.

Abolurin also said pilot testing of some acquired surveillance drones had been carried out in parts of the Niger-Delta like Bayelsa state.

He said members of the corps’ anti-vandalism unit had completed contemporary training techniques in accordance with international standards.

The official said about 250 vandals had been directly arrested, 100 others arrested by other security agencies and handed over to them for prosecution and 35 vandals already convicted.

He said major infrastructures like power installation, telecommunication masts and equipment are now being properly protected following renewed efforts by the corps to focus on them.

He also urged the media, host communities and other stakeholders to join hands with the NSCDC and other security agencies to arrest the issues of oil theft and pipeline vandalism.

The NSCDC just recently returned to their posts to protect and monitor the oil pipelines after the federal government finally terminated the pipeline surveillance and protection contract awarded to many independent ethnic security groups by former president Goodluck Jonathan.

Mr. Patrick Ndubisi, a 35-year-old park attendant, who lost three children in a fire incident that occurred on June 13, at 18, Fakoya street, Egbeda-Akowonjo Lagos, has narrated to The Nation how the tragedy happened.

Patrick, who works with an interstate transport company in Oshodi, dismissed claims carried by the media that his negligence probably caused the death of his kids.

The media had earlier reported that Patrick had lit a candle and locked the children inside the house to go and visit his wife, who was just delivered of a baby.

But he disagreed with the claims carried by the media, claiming that there was a conspiracy surrounding the death of his children.

He alleged that some neighbors were complicit in the death of his children, citing an instance of a woman, who was seen in the backyard before the fire started.

Patrick whose relationship with his co-tenants and landlord appears to be strained has also queried why his children were not alerted by other tenants when the fire started.

Policemen attached to the X Squad Unit of Lagos state police command are investigating Hakeem Bello, an estranged  in-law to former president Olusegun Obasanjo.

Akeem, who was married to Iyabo Obasanjo, was seen at the Lagos state police command last week Friday. He was allegedly quizzed following a petition written by one Mr. Sumonu Olalekan to the state commissioner of police, Mr. Kayode Aderanti, alleging that Bello brought military personnel to his property and destroyed it and also gave police false information that he is threatening his life among others.

The commissioner of police it was learnt directed the  officer in charge of X-Squad to investigate the case and Akeem Bello was subsequently invited to appear before the police to defend himself on June 12. It was gathered that Mr. Bello, however, did not honour the invitation on that day as he sent a lawyer and his co-accused one Idowu Adedoyin to honour the invitation.

A police source who spoke an condition of anonymity, said:“When he (Akeem Bello) eventually reported to the police on Wednesday 17th June 2015, he admitted using the military personnel adding that he used them to protect the people that were working for him as Sumonu Olalekan and others were disturbing his workers. He also told the police that he bought the land from one Dr Victor Olaiya and tendered some documents to back up his claim.”

Sumonu Olalekan, however, told the police that Mr. Bello had earlier written a petition to the  Area G police command and SARS Ikeja, where he allegedly wrongly informed the police that he threatened his life and that he was an armed robber which led to his arrest on several occasions.

“In his response, Akeem Bello denied the allegation as he  said last December around 2am –3am, there was sporadic shooting at the back of his house and the people were shouting Akeem come out we are going to kill you today which made him to report a case of threat to life at Area G.

“After listening to both parties, the O/C in charge of Xsquad advised them to seek legal redress in court but directed his men to investigate the use of military personnel in a civil matter by Akeem Bello instead of the police and also investigate the case of threat to life and any other allegation and report back to him soonest.”

It was gathered that Akeem Bello, was later granted bail but asked to report to the police anytime he is needed.
